Here is part of an article in Country Doctor: The small village of Lyme, New Hampshire, lies south west of the White Mountains; two miles further west the Connecticut River divides New Hampshire from Vermont. Dartmouth Medical School and the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital are ten miles to the south, in Hanover. In 1935 the town of Lyme, which had a population of about 900, had been without a doctor for some time. Despite the great depression residents voted at a town meeting to raise $500 for the support of a doctor for the ensuing year. Bill Putnam was finishing an 18 month internship at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital when the vacancy in Lyme came to his attention. The position was ideal for his requirements; as a 9 year old he had barely escaped death in the influenza epidemic of 1918 and, inspired by his attending physician, had decided then to become a doctor in a small New Hampshire town. And so it was that on 1 January 1936 William F Putnam, M.D. hung out his shingle - or put up his plate - in Lyme, having made his first house call the night before. "Doc Putnam" had begun his career. He stayed in Lyme for 42 years, and his practice expanded to include 24 communities in two states. He once calculated that his territory encompassed more than 1000 square miles.Ӧnbsp;

in New Castle, Delaware in 1910, in Gloucester County New Jersey in 1920 and

He
is 39 PA NY PA and a pupil at the Vineland Colony of Training Schools. He was
here and most of the pupils are in their 30s and 40s, so probably a school for
idiots of sorts. He is a son of Eugene G. Putnam and Marion Camp and was at
home on Staten Island, New York in 1910 and then with his widowed mother there
in 1920 and a pupil/inmate here in 1930. In 1910 Eugene had his widowed father
Grant Putnam (born NY1832) with him. In 1910 Eugene had his widowed father Grant
Putnam, born in New York in about 1832, with the family. Big problem is Grant
was never seen before or after that census, so no clues as to what this line
is.

Alice is29 NJ and they have Robert 6 NJ and Virginia 1 NY. Say they were in the
same house in 1935 and most likely in Europe or Africa or the Moon in 1930 and

FRANCES
PUTNAM Lawrence Township, Mercer County
She
is 51 CT, single and assistant superintendent at the Lawrenceville School. Itճ
a very good Prep School near Princeton, and like all Prep Schools in those
days, just like my Brunswick, they were never co-ed. Lawrenceville and mine
were guys only, but had a girls only school a block or so away. Anyway. Frances
never showed up in Connecticut or New Jersey. She said she was in New York City
in 1935, but never was in any censuses there either. Tried on line and found
she was in 2 censuses, this one in 1940, and in Marietta, Ohio in 1920. I
looked at that and found I not only had her in that one, but also in 1900 and
1910. No wonder couldnմ find her in Connecticut, or anywhere out East. I hadnմ
figured her yet though. In 1900 she was listed 11 CT and granddaughter of
Barbara Hale. In 1910 and 1920 she was listed as a niece of Nellie Hale. Then I
vaguely remembered that two brothers, sons of Peter Putnam from Marietta popped
up in Connecticut. So, here is my 1880 Connecticut Census for one of the sons,
Abbott Putnam who was in Winchester, Litchfield County in 1870, 1880 and in
1900 widowed. Abbott Putnam is 19 OH OH OH and listed as a stepson of George White 55 CT and Emily
M. P. White 43 OH CT MA. He is a son of Peter Radcliff Putnam (3248) and Emily
Mixer, and was born in Marietta, Ohio. He and his brother Israel were here with
some other family in 1870. Both brothers will be out in New York State and be
there by 1910 and through 1930 at least. Now, there is a gravestone in Marietta
that is for Frances Hale who was married to Abbott Putnam. She was born in 1862
and he in 1861, so this is him. She died August 19, 1888. He returned to Ohio
and then came back out here by 1900 when he is here in Winchester So all those
Hale connections tie Fanny right in with Abbott and now
we know who she is and why she didn’t exist before this 1940 census. Peter
Radcliff Putnam (Eben # 3248) and Emily Mixer from
Marietta, Ohio somehow came out to Connecticut in the 1860s or he died and
Emily whose folks were from Connecticut came out with two of their kids, Abbott
and Israel, both born in Ohio and were in Winchester, Litchfield County in 1870
and 1880 with their mother Emily who had by then married George White from
Connecticut. Then Abbott married Frances Hale who died in1888, and Francis went
back to Ohio with Frances (Hale) kinfolk. Abbott moved on to New York, married
and kinda went off on his own and Frances his
daughter grew up in Ohio and then came out here as a pretty good School Marm.
Fun to figure her out.

daughter of Clyde Allen and Vera Jane Putnam. They were in Kansas someplace in
1920 then in Wichita, Kansas in 1925 and Houston, Texas in 1930 and she was
here in 1935. Lota traveling for a little kid. Anyway, Clyde is a son of Edwin
Josiah Putnam and his third wife Susan Brown Jacobs from Calcasieu Parish
Louisiana. He was born in Jennings, Louisiana December 19, 1892. He was home
there in 1910 and obviously in Kansas in 1920 but not listed in the index. They
are in Houston in 1930. In his 1942 WWII registration he was living in Norfolk,
Virginia and married to an Ellen. By 1935 Vera was married to Moses Wright and
she and young Clyde were in Miami County Kansas in 1935 and in 1940. Thatճ also
where I got his birth info. His dad was a son of Harvey Putnam and Rebecca
Stewart from Vermont originally. New England family.
He
is 49 PA NY NJ and is a mechanical engineer. His wife Mabel Landmesser
is 47 NJ and they have Leroy 18 NJ. They were in Newark just married in 1920

Florinda Cook and was born in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County New York July 6,
1894 and will die here in Plainfield later this year on October 1, 1940. New

He
is 19 NJ single and lodging. Also lodging here are Joseph Vandeventer
54 NJ, Maria Vandeventer his wife 38 NJ and their
daughter Marcia 14 NJ. The family was in Farmington, Connecticut in 1935. Okay,
got lucky on this one. There is a family sheet that his folks were Olin Still
Putnam and Marcia Furman. That led to a marriage certificate for Olin Still
Putnam of Johnstown, New York to Marcia Huntington, daughter of Silas Holmes
Furman in Cranford, Union County on June 1, 1920. Now, Olin is a son of Aaron
Michael Putman and Elsie Smith. He was at home in Johnstown, Fulton County New
York in 1900 and 1910. In 1920 he is listed in Union City here and is single
and lodging. Obviously got married here in June and it was also obvious it was
Marcia’s second marriage. Marcia Vandeventer is
Gerry’s mom now on her third marriage. They were married in 1924-25 so she and
Olin split before then. The family sheet I found says Olin died in New York
City January 14, 1923. Well, Marcia may have thought that, but Olin was alive
and kickin’ back in Johnstown, New York running the
family meat market there in 1930 with a new wife Gladys that he married in
1925. So that gets us who Gerald Robinson Putnam’s folks were. Gerry was born
then in Cranford, Union County March 17, 1921 and will die in New London, New
Hampshire June 18, 1994. Don’t know if he married or not though. His dad was on
the New York Dutch line out of Montgomery County and then Fulton County New
York where Olin was born April 30, 1893. Interesting.

1920. He is a son of Lewis F. Putnam and Cora
Simpkins. The family was in Herkimer County in 1900 and in Schenectady County
in 1910 and 1920. Lewis was in Pembroke in 1880, but I canմ find him earlier,
so I have no clue as to the line. Spelling has always Putnam. Lewis was born in
Oneida County September 12, 1860 and Austin was born in St. Johnsville,
Montgomery County May 5, 1897 and will die in Scotia, Schenectady County New
York in June 1972. The Putnams/Putmans in Montgomery County are about 100%
Dutch, but it was kinda 60/40 New England/Dutch in
Oneida County in 1860 so canմ figure the line. Would guess New York Dutch
though.

NEW JERSEY 1950 CENSUS
In
the 1940 census and especially now in the 1950 Census, the handwriting on the
sheets is a bit better. But now that people are using Ancestry and Family
Search and putting their family trees up on the sites, and the sites themselves
have much better search engines and send you to a whole bunch of info docs and
records. I now can find a family sheet on about everyone and many on the wife’s
side. When I first started doing this in the very early 1970s, all that was
available to see was up to the 1900. There was no such thing as on-line and the
computers then were the size of a locker room. I had to drive out to Waltham,
Massachusetts to the U. S. Library, beg for a film real of the dates and State
I wanted and then look at it through a visual device in a back dark room and
literally go page to page, county to county and write the info down on paper
with a pencil. At that time, really the most people doing genealogy were older
women, mostly retired school teachers in their 70s and 80s, who would send you
hand written trees and info and stuff that they had back a couple of
generations. Once in a while I would get an actual typewritten document. Wow!
Got much better in the 1990s. Now it is soooo easy to
get info you didn’t think was possible. Back in the 70s I tried calling folks,
and got a hold of several who had info. Now just an e-mail can bring in a ton
of info. Anyway, really enjoy these censuses, and if you can add or correct,
please let me know so I can help others.
